CPSC Issues New Bumbo Seat Warning

CPSC Issues New Bumbo Seat Warning

In October 2007, CPSC issued a recall on the popular Bumbo Baby Seat. The problem that lead to the recall was that parents and caregivers were using the Bumbo Seat on high surfaces, such as tables or counters, and babies were maneuvering themselves out of the seat and then onto the floor below, causing skull fractures and other injuries. The remedy for this problem was new labels that more prominently instructed consumers to use the Bumbo Seat only on the floor.
However, CPSC says nearly 50 more babies have been injured since that recall because parents are still using the seats on high surfaces. Seventeen of those babies ended up with skull fractures. So, once again, CPSC is reminding parents to use the Bumbo Baby Seat only on the floor.
The new CPSC warning also mentions at least two known skull fractures and one concussion that resulted from babies falling from a Bumbo Seat used on the floor. The injuries happened when the babies hit their heads on hard flooring or nearby toys.
What's clear from this latest warning is that it's not enough to just use the Bumbo Seat on the floor. The number of injuries reported by CPSC indicates that it's fairly easy for a baby to escape the Bumbo Seat. That means parents who are using the Bumbo should be very careful about what baby could fall on or in to when the escape happens. If babies can fall out of the seat easily, it's not a device that you could leave your baby in when you're not directly supervising, even if it's on the floor.
